The cruise ship Sapphire Princess altered its course during a voyage in the western Mediterranean due to a distressing incident. On April 21, a crew member spotted an orange object in the water, initially thought to be a potential “man overboard” situation. The bridge team promptly ordered the ship to investigate, later identifying the object as a lifejacket.
As the ship repositioned, a grim discovery was made: five bodies were found approximately 140 miles off Cabo de Palos, located between Spain and North Africa. The Sapphire Princess, which had departed from Cagliari in Sardinia, initiated a search and recovery operation that lasted several hours to ensure no additional individuals were in danger. During this effort, lifeboats were deployed to retrieve the bodies, which were confirmed not to belong to any passengers or crew members.
The atmosphere onboard shifted dramatically as guests and crew processed the somber event, with public areas closed off in respect. The captain addressed everyone, offering counseling and support services to help manage the emotional impact of the situation. The ship later arrived in Cartagena, where the bodies were transferred for post-mortem examinations, and authorities launched an investigation into the identities and circumstances of the victims, believed to be migrants from a previously reported missing vessel.
