Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) has successfully discharged a 2,241-tonne shipment of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units, consisting of 54 heavy-lift batteries, aimed at enhancing Sri Lanka’s national grid. This marks a significant milestone in the country’s largest energy storage initiative to date.

The cargo arrived aboard the specialized heavy-lift vessel Da Xiang, with each battery unit weighing around 41.5 tonnes, exceeding the terminal’s standard lifting capacity. As a result, CICT implemented a detailed operational plan to manage the discharge during a midnight shift, utilizing two quay cranes and dedicated ground resources to ensure safety and efficiency.

These BESS units will be installed in 16 substations nationwide as part of a broader strategy to enhance renewable energy integration and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, aligning with Sri Lanka’s goal of achieving 70% renewable energy generation by 2030. CICT’s CEO, Jan Zhang, emphasized the terminal’s readiness to handle specialized cargo, underscoring the importance of ports in supporting the nation’s energy security and sustainable growth.
