Steelpaint GmbH has successfully applied its one-component coating, Stelpant PU Combination 500, on fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and glass-enamel structures in an industrial setting. This marks the first significant use of this coating on such substrates, commonly employed across various industries. The project, conducted in Ban Chang, Thailand, involved the external renovation of nine vertical FRP tanks subjected to harsh conditions, including sunlight, humidity, and chemical exposure.
The coating was applied over 1,250 m² in November 2021, using a PU Stelpant 500 base layer followed by a cover lacquer. Following this achievement, a test application on an 840 m² FRP tank roof occurred in March 2025. Dmitry Gromilin, Steelpaint’s chief technical supervisor, noted that the tanks previously suffered from surface degradation due to UV exposure. Traditional repairs would require a two-component system, but Stelpant’s single-component approach allowed for effective restoration with minimal surface preparation, highlighting its adhesive-like properties.
Director Frank Müller emphasized that Combination 500 has now proven its effectiveness in a challenging environment. It demonstrates excellent adhesion and curing capabilities under moist and UV-intensive conditions, making it suitable for various substrates. The product meets ISO 12944 C5 standards, and future projects are anticipated to further extend its application range.
