Vuyk Engineering has designed a transformation for Boskalis’ Windpiper, converting it into a subsea rock installation vessel with a capacity exceeding 45,000 tons, making it the largest in its category. Originally built for different purposes, the Windpiper is now equipped for offshore rock installation activities.

The design features an inclined fall pipe system that directs rock from the vessel to the seabed. This cargo handling system includes loading hoppers in the hull and feeders on deck that facilitate a continuous flow of material into the fall pipe. To optimize bulk handling, several compartments of the original vessel were modified, allowing for direct loading and transfer.

Vuyk conducted structural engineering assessments for the redesigned cargo hold and the supporting tower. Finite element analyses were employed to determine necessary reinforcements to handle the increased loads from bulk operations. Stability calculations ensured compliance with subsea rock installation vessel criteria.

The project culminated in an integrated engineering package that not only focused on cargo handling and structural modifications but also streamlined system integration, ensuring efficient operation through well-defined interfaces between equipment like hoppers, conveyors, and excavators.
