On August 9, 2026, twenty-three Filipino seafarers returned to Manila after being involved in drone strikes in the Black Sea. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported that ten of these individuals were crew members of the M/V Christina B, while the remaining thirteen were from the M/V Asia. The return was facilitated by the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), with rapid response teams ensuring their safe transit from Romania to Qatar before arriving in the Philippines.
Upon their arrival, the seafarers received assistance from DMW and OWWA, including financial aid and initial medical checks conducted by the Manila International Airport Authority Medical Team. Representatives from the deploying manning agencies, Southfield Agencies, Inc. and Intercrew Philippines Agency, Inc., were also present to ensure that the crew members received necessary psychological assessments and debriefing sessions, along with applicable benefits and compensation.
In a statement, OIC-Assistant Secretary for Sea-based OFW Concerns Augusto San Diego III expressed relief at their safe return, emphasizing the government’s commitment to repatriating affected crew members and providing appropriate support. The DMW also reminded manning agencies to adhere to safety protocols for vessels operating in the Black Sea, underscoring the importance of ensuring the welfare of Filipino seafarers.
