The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has pledged support for three Filipino seafarers who were reportedly victims of a suspected hate crime in Bristol, England. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated that efforts are underway to facilitate the travel of the family members of the seafarer in critical condition to England. Currently, the seafarer’s child is already in the country, while arrangements for the spouse are being finalized.
Cacdac also confirmed that the other two seafarers have been safely repatriated to the Philippines. The DMW is providing various forms of assistance to these workers and their families, including financial, medical, and psychosocial support, as part of their commitment to overseas Filipino workers.
The incident, which occurred on July 31, left one seafarer critically injured and two others with minor injuries. The authorities in Bristol are actively investigating the case, and while it remains uncertain whether the attack will be classified as a hate crime, suspects are currently in custody. Cacdac emphasized that the DMW is awaiting further details from the ongoing investigation involving the three crew members of the MV Aklow Beacon.
