Indian Crew Safe After Iranian Coast Guard Incident with Togo Flagged Vessel

A Togo-flagged oil and chemical tanker, MT CHIRON 7, was involved in an incident near Oman after Iranian authorities fired warning shots. Fortunately, all 17 Indian crew members aboard the vessel were reported safe, according to India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The incident occurred on April 25 while the tanker was navigating near the outer port limits of Shinas, Oman, where it encountered ships intercepted by the Iranian Coast Guard.

Mandeep Randhawa, a director at the ministry, assured the media that no Indian-flagged vessels were affected by the situation. He emphasized that the safety of Indian sailors is a priority, and the ministry is actively coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and maritime stakeholders to ensure their well-being and the continuity of operations.

In the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Shipping’s control room received a significant volume of communications, handling 7,780 calls and 16,650 emails while maintaining contact with 2,770 Indian ships. Of these, 12 provided updates, and the situation is being closely monitored with no immediate concerns.

Port operations across India remain unaffected, with no reports of congestion, indicating that maritime activities continue to function normally.
