Seafarers docking at Ukrainian ports will now receive specialized safety kits to protect them from missile and drone threats, thanks to a new initiative by the maritime charity Stella Maris. These kits are designed to assist crews in preparing for and responding to emergencies in conflict-affected areas, reflecting the growing geopolitical tensions impacting global shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

Each safety kit contains crucial first aid supplies, such as haemostatic tourniquets, pressure bandages, and treatment for flash burns, specifically addressing trauma from warfare. Additionally, the kits include printed materials with air raid procedures, locations of public shelters, and information stickers for ship bulkheads. This initiative has been launched with funding from Den Norske Krigsforsikring for Skib (DNK), which has allowed for the production and distribution of these kits to vessels entering Ukrainian ports.

Fr. Alexander Smerechynskyy, Stella Maris Ukraine’s National Director, emphasized the need for such kits, noting that many overseas crews arrive without clear instructions on how to act during an air raid. He stated that preparedness can be a matter of life and death. The initiative not only provides essential medical supplies but also clear multilingual instructions and emergency guidance through QR codes, enabling crews to act with confidence and clarity in crisis situations.

Since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Stella Maris has supported seafarers, their families, and the local Odesa community through various initiatives, including mental health counseling and financial literacy programs. The organization’s efforts have been complemented by emergency financial support to over 300 families of seafarers and port workers, showcasing the importance of collaboration across the maritime sector for the safety and well-being of those in high-risk regions.
