Özdemir Tokel, the Head of Communications for the Cabinet of Ministers of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), stated that it is suspected that three crew members from a recently sunken ship off Northern Cyprus may be Azerbaijani nationals. In response to inquiries, he clarified that there is currently no confirmed information regarding the presence of Azerbaijani citizens among the ship’s passengers.
Tokel further explained that, to date, no Azerbaijani passengers have been identified. However, he noted that if an individual holds dual citizenship, such as Azerbaijani and Turkish, and entered the country using a Turkish passport, it could complicate identification efforts. This situation may necessitate further investigations to ascertain the identities of those with dual nationality.
The tragic incident occurred yesterday when a passenger ship sank near Northern Cyprus. Rescue efforts have successfully saved 242 individuals, but sadly, eight fatalities have been reported, and search operations continue for 17 missing persons. Authorities have detained eight individuals in connection with the sinking as part of their ongoing investigation into the incident.
