The inauguration of the new Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) building took place today, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu officiating the event. Funded by the Japanese government, the center is designed to enhance the Maldives’ capabilities in rescuing individuals and goods from maritime emergencies. Construction began in 2022, and the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) expedited the project in alignment with the President’s commitment to bolster Coast Guard services.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Japan’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, and MNDF Chief of Defense Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy. Ambassador Rumiko emphasized the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations and reaffirmed Japan’s ongoing support for developmental initiatives in the Maldives. General Hilmy highlighted the center’s critical role in aiding distressed marine vessels and saving lives at sea.
Equipped with modern resources for coordinating maritime and aerial incidents, the MRCC includes an operations room, classrooms, and an auditorium for training military personnel. The MNDF also acknowledged support from the Australian government, which provided essential technical equipment. The MRCC has addressed over 3,700 incidents in the past decade, successfully rescuing 8,359 individuals, along with various marine vessels and goods.
