The Indian Coast Guard successfully rescued 14 crew members from a JSW maritime vessel that ran aground off Raigad’s Kolaba Fort due to severe weather conditions. Despite adverse conditions limiting air operations, the Coast Guard launched a daring operation to evacuate the stranded crew from the vessel on Friday.
The distress call from JSW Raigad, a 121.6 m long bulk carrier with 14 Indian crew, was received by the Indian Coast Guard ship Sankalp on Patrol and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai. The vessel reported anchor dragging, loss of control, and flooding in the engine room, leading to it running aground on reefs near Alibag. Given the extreme sea conditions, airlift was the only option left for rescue.
All 14 crew members were successfully evacuated from the vessel by a Coast Guard helicopter and safely disembarked at Alibag beach. The Coast Guard station Murud Janjira is coordinating with local authorities for further aid to the mariners. The JSW group confirmed that the vessel got caught in stormy weather between Jaigarh and Salav, drifting due to strong winds and low visibility, with no casualties reported so far.
