Royal Caribbean has enlisted the services of marine technology company Greensea IQ to provide robotic hull cleaning for two of the largest cruise ships in the world. The EverClean Service offered by Greensea IQ utilizes cutting-edge underwater robotics technology to automate hull cleanings while in port, reducing the need for manual cleanings that are costly and time-consuming. This service not only improves vessel efficiency by reducing biofouling but also minimizes fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Allure of the Seas, built in 2010, will be the first ship with a non-copper-based coating to undergo cleaning at Port Canaveral, Fla., marking a significant milestone for both Greensea IQ and the port. Meanwhile, the Harmony of the Seas, constructed in 2016, will receive regular cleanings in Galveston, Texas, providing Royal Caribbean with valuable insights into the effectiveness of the EverClean service in challenging environments.
Alex Kern, the director of sales for Greensea IQ’s Robotics as a Service (RaaS), expressed the company’s commitment to delivering advanced and eco-friendly cleaning solutions that enhance vessel efficiency and sustainability. Both the Allure of the Seas and the Harmony of the Seas are part of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class vessels, with each ship previously holding the title of the world’s largest cruise ship at the time of their launch.
