Tanker Reports Explosions in Hormuz: Maritime Agency
DUBAI, Aug 6, 2026 (BSS/AFP) – An oil tanker has reported hearing explosions while navigating the Hormuz Strait, close to Oman, according to a British maritime agency. This incident coincides with ongoing discussions between Tehran and Muscat regarding the management of this crucial waterway.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) disclosed that the tanker’s captain reported two explosions approximately ten miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Kumzar, Oman. Fortunately, the agency confirmed that both the crew and the vessel are safe, and no environmental damage has been noted.
Since the onset of the Middle East conflict on February 28, Iran has asserted control over the Strait of Hormuz, reportedly firing upon vessels that do not adhere to designated routes. This situation raises concerns about maritime safety and the implications for international shipping in the region.
