Chief executives of prominent maritime trade bodies are urging the UK Government to prioritize the release of a long-awaited plan for decarbonizing the sector. Signatories, including the UK Chamber of Shipping, Cruise Lines International, British Ports Association, and the UK Major Ports Group, have written a letter to new maritime minister Mike Kane emphasizing the importance of this plan.
The maritime industry is concerned about being left behind in decarbonization efforts, especially in comparison to the progress seen in the aviation sector. The delay in updating the Clean Maritime Plan, originally published in 2019 with a promised update in 2023, is causing unease among industry leaders. They stress the need for a refreshed plan to meet new emissions targets and maintain competitiveness.
The signatories of the letter are eager for the new Government to prioritize the publication of an updated plan to ensure confidence for businesses to invest in decarbonization efforts. The chamber’s chief executive, Rhett Hatcher, highlights the importance of providing industry and investors with a clear framework for emissions reduction. Meetings with Minister Kane are planned post-summer recess to address these concerns and push for timely action on decarbonization plans.
