The cruise industry is gearing up for a significant expansion in the coming years, with 15 new cruise ships set to enter service in 2025. This influx of new vessels will require cruise lines to hire over 20,000 new crew members to meet the demand. The figure includes both the crew members onboard the new ships and an additional 25 percent staff to cover vacation times.
According to the Cruise Industry News Global Cruise Ship Index, the newbuilds will add nearly 40,000 guest berths to the market. With an average guest-to-crew ratio of 2.5 to 1, the new ships will have the capacity for over 16,000 crew members. Cruise lines are expected to hire approximately 75,000 crew members by 2036 for new vessels alone, based on current orders.
Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises Group, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, and OLC are among the companies set to significantly increase their onboard workforce to accommodate the new ships. The 62 new vessels will add nearly 150,000 new berths to the market and maintain a guest-to-crew ratio of 2.4 to 1. The Cruise Industry News Global Cruise Ship Index provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future cruise fleet, including key metrics such as cruise line, ship name, build date, guest capacity, and crew capacity.
