The Houthis military and spokesperson have claimed to launch a hypersonic missile for the first time, targeting an MSC containership in the Gulf of Aden. The missile was described as locally made with advanced technology, accuracy, and long-range capabilities. The attack on the MSC Sarah V vessel, sailing near Yemen’s Socotra Island, resulted in a “close proximity” explosion, with no injuries or damage reported.
Media reports suggest the Houthis have been manufacturing hypersonic missiles capable of reaching Mach 8, threatening shipping in the Indian Ocean. Iran is believed to be providing missile capabilities to the Houthis. In addition to missile attacks, the Houthis also showcased a new remote-controlled attack boat, named Tufan 1, capable of carrying explosives and reaching speeds of 35 knots. Recent attacks targeted vessels in Haifa and the Mediterranean, with some denials and unconfirmed reports by monitoring efforts from the UK and U.S.
Further attacks allegedly targeting ships in multiple locations have been reported by the Houthis, including in Eilat, Israel. These claims have raised concerns and prompted monitoring efforts to track the situation and ensure the safety of ships in the region. The development of new missile capabilities and attack methods by the Houthis is being closely watched and investigated to assess the potential threats they pose to maritime security.
