The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has successfully provided timely welfare assistance and repatriation support for 15 Indian seafarers stranded at Kamsar Port, Republic of Guinea. This situation arose after the crew members faced prolonged non-payment of wages while serving on the MV GOLDY SEVEN.
Upon their disembarkation, the seafarers required immediate support to address essential needs such as food, accommodation, and travel arrangements back to India. In response to their distress, the DGMA swiftly intervened to protect the welfare and rights of these individuals. Collaborating with the Seafarers Welfare Fund Society (SWFS) in Mumbai and the Indian Embassy in Conakry, the DGMA ensured the affected seafarers received the necessary support.
Under the auspices of SWFS, interim financial assistance was granted to the seafarers with the approval of its management committee. This support catered to their immediate needs, facilitating essentials like sustenance and accommodation while arranging for their repatriation. The Indian Embassy also played a vital role, helping with accommodation and food to ensure a smooth return journey to India.
This coordinated effort emphasizes the ongoing commitment of Indian maritime authorities and welfare organizations to uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of Indian seafarers, especially those facing hardship abroad. DGMA and SWFS remain dedicated to providing timely assistance to distressed seafarers, reaffirming that every individual’s welfare matters, regardless of their location.
