The establishment of a Seafarers’ Welfare Centre at Mormugao Port has received official approval, aimed at enhancing support for maritime professionals. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve maritime infrastructure and education in the region. A well-regarded Maritime Training Institute in Goa is also being considered for affiliation with Indian Maritime University to bolster maritime education and training opportunities.
The approval for the welfare center, which comes with financial backing of Rs 13 crore from the Seafarers Welfare Fund Society, addresses proposals aimed at improving facilities for seafarers. This initiative is part of a response to calls for enhanced maritime sector support, including the establishment of various amenities for seafarers.
Additionally, to facilitate shore leave for Indian seafarers, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Shore Leave Passes has been issued to streamline immigration processes at seaport Immigration Posts. Recent amendments to the Visa Manual also aim to simplify immigration procedures for seamen and aircrew, further supporting the maritime community.
Further proposals include the establishment of a Seamen’s Club at Mormugao Port, which would provide additional facilities for seafarers, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the maritime sector in the area.
