Interferry, the global trade association for the ferry industry, has expressed support for the European Commission’s proposed revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The association believes this proposal could significantly enhance maritime decarbonization, contingent on ensuring accessible onshore power infrastructure and reliable grid connections through Member State obligations and improved funding mechanisms.
The organization emphasizes that the proposal aligns with the ferry sector’s decarbonization strategy, which aims for sustainable electrification of ports and vessels. However, the expansion of hybrid and battery-electric ferry operations hinges on EU passenger ports meeting their legal obligations to provide onshore power supply (OPS). Additionally, Member States must ensure local grids can supply sufficient electricity for charging vessels without disrupting regional energy resources.
Interferry urges lawmakers to allocate 100% of maritime ETS revenues to maritime decarbonization initiatives, including support for sustainable marine fuels and clean technologies. While the proposed Sustainable Maritime Alternative Propulsion (SMAP) mechanism is welcomed, Interferry warns that the estimated EUR 1 billion in annual funding may fall short of meeting demand across the entire maritime sector, including ferry operations.
Finally, the revision should create a clear pathway for zero-emission operators to access SMAP funding in advance, as fully electric ferry operators face substantial upfront costs despite not needing allowances.
