India’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, highlighted the critical importance of secure maritime routes for international peace and economic stability, noting that disruptions in these channels could significantly affect global energy and food security.
Parvathaneni addressed concerns about attacks on seafarers, stressing that their safety should be a priority in international efforts. He called for effective planning and cooperation for the evacuation and medical care of affected crew members during crises. The need for a coordinated framework to ensure safe evacuations from conflict zones was underscored, along with the identification of responsibilities among nations and organizations.
Emerging threats, such as cyber risks and interference with navigation, were also discussed. India advocated for international cooperation and responsible technology use to address these challenges and proposed a proactive approach to developing a resilient maritime system, rather than merely responding to crises. Parvathaneni urged countries with vested shipping interests to collaborate, reaffirming India’s commitment to enhancing maritime security and ensuring uninterrupted international commerce.
