The international aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders – MSF) successfully secured the release of their migrant rescue ship, the Geo Barents, which had been detained by the Italian government for allegedly failing to coordinate properly with authorities during a rescue operation off the coast of Libya. The vessel had been under a 60-day detention order, the longest on record, but a court in Salerno suspended the measure, allowing the ship to resume its life-saving missions. MSF International President Christos Christou criticized the government for obstructing humanitarian sea rescues and accused them of tying the hands of doctors in the Mediterranean, which he described as a “huge emergency room.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has taken a hardline approach towards NGOs operating in the Mediterranean, passing legislation to restrict their activities and increase their costs. The MSF ship was accused of not following proper procedures during a rescue operation, but Christou defended the organization, stating that they were simply waiting for instructions before picking up migrants who had jumped into the sea. Meloni has defended her policies, claiming that they have led to a decrease in sea arrivals and migrant drownings, and she plans to launch further crackdowns on migrant work permits.
Despite the decrease in sea arrivals, there have still been around 44,500 arrivals in Italy this year, with approximately 1,100 people either drowning or going missing at sea. As part of her deterrence strategy, Meloni’s government is constructing detention camps in Albania for migrants picked up at sea. However, MSF has expressed concerns about this initiative, viewing it as a way to shift the responsibility of assisting migrants away from Italy and Europe. Christou emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of migration and ensuring that all individuals fleeing from poverty or conflict receive the necessary support and protection.
