Celebrity Cruises Floats First River Cruise Ship

The Dutch shipyards have achieved significant milestones in constructing the first river cruise ships for Celebrity Cruises, with the initial hull recently floated and transferred to the fitting-out yard. This marks the brand’s entry into river cruising, set to launch in August 2027. In January 2025, Celebrity Cruises announced plans to build ten river ships, and by June 30, 2026, contracts for the first four vessels had been finalized. Additionally, a commitment for ten more ships was made in January 2026, expanding the fleet to 20 by 2031.

Construction of the first hull commenced in January 2026 at the Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam, with the float-out taking place on September 9. The hull, named Celebrity Compass, traveled approximately 50 miles to TeamCo in Heusden for interior completion. The ship’s design, approximately 135 meters long and accommodating up to 170 passengers, emphasizes a modern exterior and lightweight hull, aimed at providing smoother sailing even during low water conditions.

Celebrity’s river cruise ships will feature six dining options, a top-deck bar and lounge, and familiar spaces from their ocean vessels. Each ship will include 86 staterooms, comprising various categories, including suites and balcony staterooms. The brand anticipates that this new venture will attract its loyal customers interested in river cruising, bringing innovation to ship design and onboard experiences.

The first cruise will navigate the Danube between Budapest and Vilshofen, with subsequent ships introduced throughout 2027 and 2028. The Royal Caribbean Group is keenly observing the development of this new offering and is open to expanding river cruising across its other brands, including Royal Caribbean International and Silversea Cruises.
