Chennai Port is set to unveil its upgraded cruise terminal, completing a ₹29.8 crore modernization project launched in early 2025. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ Cruise Bharat Mission, aimed at enhancing cruise tourism and modernizing facilities at Indian ports.
The renovation has increased the terminal’s capacity from 1,000 to 1,800 passengers, focusing on the southern side of the facility. This complements previous upgrades completed in 2018 on the northern side. Key enhancements include dedicated embarkation and disembarkation zones, approximately 50 immigration counters, improved elevator and escalator services, upgraded interiors, Wi‑Fi, and a dedicated customs area.
The upgraded terminal will facilitate arrivals and departures to destinations such as Visakhapatnam, Sri Lanka, and Puducherry, with anticipated growth in cruise traffic. Plans for food and beverage outlets on the mezzanine floor are also in place, positioning Chennai as a significant cruise tourism hub on India’s east coast.
