The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has broadened its network of approved medical providers, enhancing the options available to seafarers and coastal pilots for medical examinations. This initiative allows STCW-qualified individuals to select from four accredited medical providers situated in over 73 locations across the country, facilitating the completion of the medical assessments necessary for obtaining an AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness.
Greg Witherall, AMSA’s Executive Director of Maritime Safety and Environmental Compliance, emphasized that this expanded network aims to make a vital certification process more accessible for Australia’s maritime workforce. He noted that the changes are a direct response to feedback from seafarers, who expressed a desire for increased flexibility and easier access to approved medical services, especially when juggling work responsibilities, family commitments, and travel.
By enlarging the network, seafarers can now opt for a medical provider that aligns with their specific location, schedule, and personal needs. This enhancement is expected to streamline the medical examination process, making it more convenient and user-friendly for those in the maritime industry.
