The Vizhinjam port in Kerala has recently gained approval to conduct crew change operations for both small and large vessels. In anticipation of increased activity, the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) is planning to enhance the port’s facilities to accommodate crew members around the clock. Currently, KMB is waiting for the immigration department to finalize a standard operating procedure (SOP) before fully launching these operations.
To improve the crew experience, KMB officials have announced plans to establish a lounge and a facilitation center, which will provide additional space for crew members to wait and complete necessary procedures. An estimate for these enhancements is being prepared following a recent meeting. Officials acknowledged that while basic amenities were previously available, the existing facilities may not suffice for the anticipated volume of crew changes.
The port, which successfully facilitated the replacement of over 12,500 crew members for nearly 1,000 ships during the COVID-19 pandemic, is also undergoing upgrades. Repairs are needed for certain equipment, including cranes and tugs, and a customs-notified storage facility is required. The formalization of crew change operations is expected to generate stable revenue for KMB, benefiting the local government and hospitality sector.
