First Ammonia-Powered Bulk Carrier Begins Journey

'World's First' Ammonia-Powered Bulk Carrier Starts

CMB.TECH has launched the Mineral Europa, touted as the world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk carrier, on its inaugural journey to Australia. This milestone marks a significant advancement in the adoption of alternative fuels in the shipping industry. The vessel, with a deadweight capacity of 210,000 tonnes and built in 2026, is the first of 21 ammonia-powered ships set to join CMB.TECH’s fleet by 2029.

The company’s ambitious program includes 18 dry bulk carriers, one container ship, and two chemical tankers, with the majority expected to be delivered within the next nine months. This initiative reflects a long-term commitment to decarbonizing shipping, demonstrating that sustainable practices are becoming a reality rather than a future goal.

Ammonia serves as a marine fuel without emitting carbon dioxide during combustion, although its overall environmental impact depends on production methods. To bolster this transition, CMB.TECH is investing in ammonia storage infrastructure and bunkering barges to ensure a reliable fuel supply for ocean-going vessels.

In tandem with its fleet expansion, CMB.TECH is developing an ammonia supply network to facilitate broader adoption of this fuel in commercial shipping. The company operates a diverse fleet of around 235 vessels across various maritime sectors, including dry bulk, crude oil, and offshore energy.
CMB.TECH’s Mineral Europa, the first ammonia-powered dry bulk vessel, marks a pivotal moment in sustainable shipping. This 210,000-deadweight-tonne ship, part of a fleet expansion, showcases the industry’s shift towards alternative fuels. Seafarers will play a crucial role in operating these innovative vessels, driving the future of eco-friendly maritime transport.
