UKMTO Orders Ships to Leave Anchorages Near UAE

UK Maritime Agency Instructs Ships Near UAE Coast To Depart Anchorages

Several vessels near Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates were ordered via radio to vacate their anchorages on Saturday evening, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The agency reported that multiple ship captains in the vicinity received instructions through very high frequency (VHF) radio broadcasts to leave their positions. UKMTO has categorized this incident as “suspicious activity” and is currently investigating the matter.

The advisory emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging other vessels in the area to report any additional suspicious occurrences. However, UKMTO did not disclose the source of the directives nor confirm whether any ships complied with the orders. Fortunately, there have been no reports of attacks or damage to vessels related to this incident.

This advisory comes amid escalating maritime tensions and various security incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding Gulf region. The strategic waterway has been a focal point in negotiations between the United States and Iran, particularly regarding maritime traffic control.

In February, the US and Israel initiated military actions against Iran, which led to retaliatory strikes by Iran on US and Israeli targets until a ceasefire was achieved in April. Despite a memorandum signed in June aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, its implementation has faced delays due to ongoing disagreements over maritime security.
