On May 9, the Indian Coast Guard commissioned the ICGS ‘Achal’, a state-of-the-art fast patrol vessel developed by Goa Shipyard Limited. This significant addition enhances India’s coastal surveillance and maritime security capabilities. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Goa Shipyard, attended by senior Coast Guard officials and representatives from both the Central and state governments.
The ICGS Achal is part of the advanced Adamya-class series, designed for various operations such as coastal and offshore surveillance, anti-smuggling missions, search and rescue, and marine pollution response. The name ‘Achal’, meaning “firm,” reflects the Coast Guard’s dedication to protecting India’s maritime interests and securing its borders.
Notably, the vessel is constructed with over 50% indigenous components, showcasing India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing through initiatives like “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India.” The induction of ICGS Achal is a crucial step in the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing fleet expansion program, which aims to bolster operational readiness and enhance coastal security in light of evolving maritime challenges.
Senior officials emphasized that the new vessel will significantly strengthen rapid response capabilities and improve surveillance operations in India’s coastal and offshore regions.
