India and Norway are actively seeking to enhance cooperation in key sectors such as maritime, green energy, and startups. Norwegian Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forthcoming visit to Oslo will further strengthen bilateral relations in these areas. Over the past decade, the presence of Norwegian companies in India has surged, doubling to around 160, with a significant focus on trade and investment opportunities.
Currently, approximately 70% of these companies operate within the maritime sector, reflecting Norway’s status as a leading maritime nation. Stener noted India’s ambitious plans for expanding its shipbuilding capabilities, supported by the government’s ‘Sagarmala’ initiative aimed at modernizing ports and enhancing cargo handling efficiency. Notably, 10% of Norwegian-commissioned vessels are now constructed in India, indicating substantial potential for collaboration.
In addition to maritime endeavors, Norway aims to bolster its support for India’s green energy transition. Stener highlighted Norway’s expertise in energy technology, developed over decades of oil and gas experience, which can aid India in its sustainable development goals. Furthermore, she expressed admiration for India’s vibrant startup ecosystem, indicating that Norwegian startups are keen to explore collaborative opportunities in this innovative landscape.
