The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) is introducing a new initiative called “Sagar Mein Yog” (SMY), aimed at enhancing the well-being of seafarers through various wellness modules. One notable technique included in the program is brahmari, or “bee breath,” which involves making a humming sound to promote relaxation and peace amidst the chaos of maritime life. All seafarers holding a valid Indian Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) are required to complete this course within a year, with training delivered via a dedicated Learning Management System.
The SMY program encompasses ten thematic wellness pillars, totaling 19 hours and 14 minutes of instruction. Key areas of focus include social wellness, which emphasizes interpersonal skills and conflict resolution, and occupational wellness, which addresses life adjustments on board and career development. Physical wellness covers nutrition and fitness, while intellectual wellness hones critical thinking and risk management skills.
Additionally, the program includes economic wellness, focusing on budgeting and taxation, and cultural wellness, which fosters cross-cultural competence among multinational crews. A significant component is the spiritual wellness module, which features meditation, chanting, and breathwork techniques to help seafarers cultivate a daily mindfulness practice. This initiative aligns with international maritime standards and the Indian government’s broader maritime vision.
