In light of ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting global shipping routes, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, conducted a thorough review of the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers operating in conflict-prone areas. The review underscored the government’s dedication to ensuring that every Indian mariner is safeguarded, informed, and supported during these challenging times.
Senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Directorate General of Shipping, and Heads of Indian Missions from regions such as West Asia and the Black Sea participated in the review. Minister Sonowal received updates on the current security landscape, maritime developments, and the readiness of Indian diplomatic missions to act quickly in response to any contingencies involving Indian seafarers. He emphasized that the safety of seafarers is a top priority, urging that no Indian citizen should be caught in geopolitical crossfires.
The Directorate General of Shipping reported that its 24/7 Seafarer Grievance and Assistance Cell is operational, offering continuous support to seafarers and their families. Additionally, there is an initiative to enhance pre-departure training for seafarers, focusing on safety protocols and evolving geopolitical risks. Sonowal highlighted the importance of integrating mental health support into the seafarer welfare framework, ensuring that both individuals and their families receive the necessary emotional support.
To foster an effective response, the Minister directed ongoing collaboration between Indian Missions, shipping companies, and maritime authorities. He stressed the need for transparent communication regarding operational risks, stating that the welfare of India’s maritime community must remain a priority amid uncertainties.
