The All India Seafarers Union has raised concerns regarding the increasing rejections of C1/D visas for Indian seafarers aspiring to work on cruise ships. The union reported a surge in inquiries from both newly qualified and seasoned seafarers who have faced visa denials despite having applied for cruise ship positions. As one of the largest suppliers of qualified seafarers globally, India is pivotal in this sector; however, the union cautioned that even a single visa rejection can have detrimental and long-lasting effects on a seafarer’s career trajectory.
The impact of a prior visa refusal can extend beyond the immediate application, complicating future employment opportunities with other cruise lines. Such rejections become part of the applicant’s visa history, potentially influencing subsequent assessments. In light of these challenges, the union has called on embassies and consular authorities to meticulously verify legitimate employment offers, cruise company documentation, and recruitment records before making decisions.
Furthermore, the union urged officials to engage applicants with pertinent questions regarding their employment details, vessel information, and travel purposes. It emphasized the importance of allowing applicants a fair chance during visa interviews to present their cases and supporting documents. The union underscored that seafarers are ‘essential workers,’ whose careers depend heavily on access to international job opportunities.
