A.P. Moller – Maersk marked a significant achievement in India’s maritime industry by unveiling the first export-import shipping container manufactured in the country. The inaugural container was showcased at the Inland Container Depot in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, in the presence of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. Following this milestone, Maersk ordered an additional 1,000 containers from DCM Shriram Group, establishing a strong commercial partnership.

The realization of this project stemmed from a 16-month collaboration, initiated when Maersk’s Chairman met Prime Minister Modi in early 2025. Minister Sonowal emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “The first made-in-India container represents our potential and is a testament to Atmanirbhar Bharat in action.”

Maersk adhered to stringent international quality standards, including ISO specifications and the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). Rigorous testing confirmed the container’s compliance, showcasing India’s ability to meet global demands. The Union Government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) framework, aimed at enhancing competitiveness, further bolstered the container’s manufacturing viability, signaling a collaborative effort toward India’s Maritime Vision 2030.

Looking forward, Maersk plans to expand its involvement in India’s container manufacturing sector, viewing this milestone as a foundation for a long-term supply relationship that prioritizes quality and cost competitiveness.
