First Very Large Ammonia Carrier Launched by HD Hyundai Samho for Maersk

HD Hyundai Samho has celebrated a significant achievement by delivering its first Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC), the 93,000-cubic-meter Jane Maersk, to Denmark’s Maersk Shipping. This vessel marks the first of five VLACs that Maersk ordered in November 2023, underscoring the growing demand for ships dedicated to transporting low-carbon fuels.

The Jane Maersk is engineered to transport both liquefied ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), featuring advanced safety systems designed to mitigate the risks associated with ammonia’s toxic and corrosive nature. Notably, it includes a high-level alarm system aimed at preventing overfilling during loading, highlighting a commitment to operational safety.

Ammonia is gaining prominence not only as a marine fuel but also as a hydrogen carrier, contributing to an increased need for specialized gas carriers. While much of the ammonia produced today is used in fertilizers, it is increasingly seen as a zero-carbon shipping alternative, especially when sourced from low-carbon or renewable energy.

With this delivery, HD Hyundai Samho solidifies its standing in the growing market for next-generation eco-conscious vessels. The shipbuilder has secured orders for nine VLACs this year alone, bringing its total to 22 vessels worth approximately $2.55 billion. This trend indicates a burgeoning confidence in the future of global ammonia trade, bolstered by investments in clean energy and alternative fuels.
