The JSI Alliance has successfully executed a complex project in India for Afcons Infrastructure Limited, involving the construction of a new liquid cargo berth for Gujarat Chemical Port Ltd. (GCPL). The Alliance was tasked with critical heavy lifting operations, which included the installation of eight jackets and fifteen berthing dolphins, each weighing between 500 and 600 tons and extending 10 meters out.
The project faced significant challenges, including a 10-meter tidal rise and strong currents of up to 5 knots, compounded by a sandy seabed that complicated traditional mooring methods. Additionally, operations had to proceed without disrupting two active berths, creating severe spatial constraints.
To address these challenges, the JSI Alliance mobilized the heavy-lift vessel Jumbo Javelin, equipped with a flyjib and an eight-point mooring system tailored to the site’s conditions. The vessel’s design included custom 250-ton winches, enhancing safety and redundancy. The installation was executed during a narrow tidal window to minimize current impact, allowing the Jumbo Javelin to maintain position without interrupting ongoing operations.
Demobilization began on December 3, with the Jumbo Javelin completing six voyages before the final item was installed on March 14. The project concluded with demobilization in just over a week, marking a successful collaboration in a challenging environment.
