It has been reported that the average turnaround time for Major Ports has significantly decreased from 52.87 hours in 2021-22 to 48.84 hours in 2025-26. Detailed port-wise and year-wise turnaround times over the past five years can be found in Annexure I. The World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2025 ranks Jawaharlal Nehru Port at 22nd position, closely following Singapore at 21st and Shanghai at 23rd, while surpassing Rotterdam, which is ranked 333rd.
The data shows varied turnaround times for different ports. For example, Deendayal Port’s turnaround time fluctuated from 60.96 hours in 2021-22 to 57.86 hours in 2025-26, while Mumbai Port decreased from 73 hours to 64.05 hours over the same period. Other ports, such as Chennai and Visakhapatnam, also exhibited changes in turnaround times, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency.
To further improve port operations, the government has initiated various measures, including the construction of new berths and terminals, modernization of existing facilities, and the establishment of central parking plazas. The One Nation One Port Process (ONOP) has been introduced to standardize port procedures, aiming to streamline operations and reduce vessel turnaround times.
This information was disclosed by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in a written response to the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing port efficiency.
