Odisha is poised to establish a major shipbuilding cluster along the Mahanadi in Kendrapada, as the Central government has granted in-principle approval for the National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Odisha Ltd (NSHIPOL) under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme. This ambitious Rs 24,700 crore project aims to transform Odisha’s rich maritime history into a modern hub for shipbuilding and heavy industries.
The proposed cluster, located near the Paradip Port, is expected to create a comprehensive ecosystem for shipbuilding, repair, and associated heavy industries, facilitating the development of large shipyards with a combined capacity of around 1.2 million gross tonnes annually. The project plans to cover approximately 2,000-2,500 acres, tapping into local production of steel, coal, and other raw materials.
As NSHIPOL prepares a detailed project report, it must secure necessary statutory approvals, including environmental clearance. Paradip Port Authority Chairperson P.L. Haranadh emphasized that this project could significantly enhance Odisha’s shipbuilding capabilities and foster job creation.
The Centre’s initiative aims to position Odisha as a competitive player in the shipbuilding sector, with potential for innovation in green vessel technology and skills development, marking a pivotal shift in the state’s maritime economy.
