Ten Indian seafarers, detained in Iran for almost a year, have been successfully released and are safe, according to an announcement from the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. This news brings much-needed relief to the families of the crew members, who faced months of uncertainty following the seizure of their vessel in the Gulf.
The Directorate General of Shipping shared on X that they were “pleased to announce” the release of all ten crew members associated with MV Harbour Phoenix. These individuals had been arrested and imprisoned in Iran after their vessel was intercepted near Jask Port in July 2025. The successful release was attributed to “sustained diplomatic engagement and coordinated efforts” involving various branches of the Indian government as well as private stakeholders.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian Embassy in Tehran were specifically acknowledged for their roles in this diplomatic endeavor. While arrangements are being made for the crew’s return to India, the Directorate General of Shipping reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and safety of Indian maritime workers globally, emphasizing that “Indian Seafarers, Our Pride. Always.”
