Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has partnered with SCMS Water Institute to conduct a feasibility study for extending the Water Metro network from Aluva Metro Station to Cochin International Airport via the Periyar River. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable and efficient water-based public transport option that enhances last-mile connectivity between Kochi’s metro system and the airport.
The project aligns with KMRL’s vision for a sustainable multimodal transport system, utilizing inland waterways to alleviate road congestion and reduce emissions. This plan positions Kochi as a leader in climate-resilient urban mobility solutions.
SCMS Water Institute will serve as KMRL’s knowledge partner, providing critical academic and technical support for the feasibility study. Areas of focus will include hydraulic assessments and infrastructure requirements, ensuring the design adheres to safety and environmental best practices.
Once completed, the Aluva-CIAL water metro link is expected to offer a faster, more reliable alternative for commuters, especially during peak hours. It will also bolster regional connectivity, enhancing tourism and economic activity around the airport and Greater Kochi area, contributing to India’s broader efforts to integrate water transport into urban mobility systems.
