German engineering firm Sonplas has introduced explosion-proof thermal chambers for testing fuel and energy system components in hazardous environments. As the demand for alternative fuels like hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia increases, these chambers provide controlled temperature conditions for validating equipment such as injectors, pumps, and power electronics.

The thermal chambers operate within a temperature range of -60°C to 180°C, simulating both cold-start and high-temperature scenarios. They utilize a nitrogen inerting system to prevent oxygen infiltration, significantly reducing combustion risks during tests involving flammable materials. Alexander Groß, Mechanical Design Team Lead at Sonplas, emphasized the need for mechanical stability and thermal responsiveness in applications that combine heavy, vibration-prone assemblies with rapid temperature changes.

Safety features include overpressure protection, leak containment, and controlled door release. The design allows for all technical equipment to be mounted above the test enclosure, ensuring easy access for various test configurations. Sonplas aims for these systems to accommodate a wide range of fuels, including gasoline and natural gas, while remaining adaptable for future energy technologies.
