On Tuesday, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways assured that all Indian vessels and their crews in the Persian Gulf are currently safe, despite rising regional tensions. Additional Secretary Mukesh Mangal addressed the media, stating that the government is vigilantly monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian diplomatic missions abroad, and maritime stakeholders to ensure the safety of seafarers and uninterrupted shipping operations.
Mangal emphasized that there have been no reported incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels over the past 24 hours, confirming the safety of all Indian seafarers in the region. The Directorate General of Shipping is effectively managing support requests, having received over 7,900 calls and 16,800 emails to date, with 140 calls and 180 emails coming in within the last day alone.
Additionally, Mangal highlighted successful repatriation efforts, with the Ministry facilitating the safe return of over 2,800 Indian seafarers, including 24 in the past day. He reassured that ports across India are operating normally, with no congestion reported.
The escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, primarily due to the standoff between the United States and Iran, have raised concerns over maritime security. However, Mangal confirmed that no Indian seafarers were injured in recent incidents involving foreign-flagged vessels, and authorities remain prepared to respond to any emerging challenges to ensure the safety of Indian nationals at sea.
