Vizhinjam International Seaport Launches ₹800 Crore Expansion Project

Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) is embarking on a significant expansion initiative, having signed three key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing the port’s infrastructure. The first phase involves an investment of approximately ₹800 crore through public-private partnerships, marking the port’s first major infrastructure development since its commercial launch in December 2024.

A highlight of these agreements is the partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Limited to create a dedicated oil bunkering facility, requiring around 20 acres of land. This facility will position Vizhinjam as a competitive marine fuel supply hub on a critical shipping route, integrating bunkering services with transshipment operations. This diversification enhances revenue prospects for the port, as vessels refueling there will contribute both to bunker sales and port fees.

Strategically, Vizhinjam’s location on the East-West shipping route makes it an ideal candidate for bunkering services. Similar major hubs have successfully combined cargo handling with bunkering to attract shipping lines. The partnership with IOC is particularly relevant amid rising global concerns about the availability of bunkering infrastructure in secure regions, further solidifying Vizhinjam’s role as an emerging maritime hub. Details of the other signed MoUs are expected soon.
