UK Ports Face Grid Connection Delays and Rising Energy Costs

According to a recent UK government report, Britain’s ports will require significantly increased electricity supplies in the coming decades to facilitate shore power, vessel charging, and alternative fuels. The Department for Transport released a summary following its “Net Zero Ports: Challenges and Opportunities” consultation, launched alongside the government’s Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy in March 2025. The report highlights that lengthy waits for grid connections and high energy costs could impede the maritime sector’s progress towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The consultation received 65 responses from diverse stakeholders, including port companies, trade associations, and shipping firms. Currently, major ports expect their electricity capacity needs to grow by two to ten times, with most operating close to their existing limits. Ports are eager to electrify cargo handling, implement shore power systems, and develop infrastructure for alternative fuels. However, delays in securing additional power are a pressing concern, with lead times for grid connection stretching up to 15 years.

Moreover, stakeholders warned that insufficient electricity availability has already deterred investment in electric vessels and green fuels. Notably, cruise and ferry operators are opting for European ports due to better access to shore power and more favorable electricity prices. The report advocates for enhanced government guidance and alignment with international regulations to facilitate ports’ transition to cleaner operations and encourage investment in essential infrastructure. A stakeholder webinar is set for September 24 to discuss these findings further.
