Maersk has confirmed an incident aboard the containership Maersk Sana in the Atlantic on April 28, resulting in injuries to three crew members. One individual is in critical but stable condition at a Bermuda hospital, while the others received treatment for their injuries. The Maersk Sana, which departed Newark, New Jersey, on April 26 en route to Singapore, is currently drifting as teams assess operational contingencies.
The vessel, built in 2004 and capable of carrying 8,450 TEU, encountered machinery issues in its main engine room. Reports from claims consultants WK Webster and W.E. Cox suggest an engine explosion, although this remains unverified. At the time of the incident, the ship was approximately 354 nautical miles east of Bermuda.
In response, the Maersk Nomazwe, which left Algeciras on April 22, diverted to assist the Maersk Sana. One crew member received first aid on the Maersk Nomazwe, while the others were transferred and later evacuated to Bermuda on April 30. One crew member has since been treated and discharged, but the other remains hospitalized.
Currently, the Maersk Sana is adrift off Bermuda’s coast, while the Maersk Nomazwe has resumed its journey to Newark, expected to arrive on May 3.
