NorthStandard has released a new report based on two years of data from its ECDIS Training Assessment (ETA) platform, which aims to enhance electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) proficiency among shipping crews. The report, titled “ETA – Learning from the Data,” analyzes over 5,000 assessments and identifies prevalent knowledge gaps that bridge teams can address through targeted training. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), provides valuable insights into industry competence and areas needing improvement.
Key findings reveal that many bridge teams struggle with essential ECDIS functions, such as identifying Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) updates and prioritizing correct ENC scales during planning. Additionally, nearly two-thirds of teams could not effectively differentiate between alarms and alerts, indicating a pressing need for enhanced training. John Southam, Loss Prevention Director at NorthStandard, emphasized that understanding these gaps allows for more focused safety campaigns and fosters a culture of continuous learning.
The ETA resource is freely available to members and offers instant feedback for self-evaluation, enabling crews to take charge of their development. With recent updates, including an AI-powered library for self-learning, the platform aims to improve ECDIS best practices and enhance navigational safety. NorthStandard continues to collaborate with UKHO and Seall ECDIS to further refine training and address mandatory requirements for ECDIS compatibility with the S-100 framework by 2029.
