France has suggested decoupling the issue of the Strait of Hormuz from broader regional tensions and negotiations, proposing a multinational mission to enhance security in this vital waterway, as reported by local media. The Elysee Palace indicated that Paris has shared these proposals with both Washington and Tehran, emphasizing the need to address security in the Strait independently from the wider regional conflict.
The French presidency articulated that France encourages the U.S. and Iran to handle the Hormuz situation separately, highlighting its significance as a matter of mutual interest. Paris has also outlined its requirements for initiating a multinational mission aimed at safeguarding maritime traffic through the strait.
Furthermore, France has proposed the resumption of Iranian tanker transits through the Strait of Hormuz, contingent upon Tehran’s commitment to engage in meaningful negotiations with the U.S. The Elysee stated that the U.S. should consider lifting its blockade in Hormuz to facilitate Iran’s willingness to negotiate on substantive issues.
Additionally, the pre-positioning of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is viewed as a clear indication that the coalition is prepared and capable of ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz, according to the French presidency.
