Demand for high-capacity offshore support vessels for floating wind projects is projected to grow in the late 2020s, with potential availability issues arising by 2029, according to a recent ABS report. The study, conducted in collaboration with Intelatus Global Partners, focuses on the role of large anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTSs) and multipurpose support vessels (MPSVs) in executing these projects.
Rob Langford, ABS Vice President of Global Offshore Markets, notes that floating offshore wind poses unique challenges related to vessel capabilities and project execution. The report emphasizes the importance of leveraging existing offshore experience while also highlighting areas requiring enhanced planning, investment, and technical readiness as projects progress.
As floating wind initiatives expand in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, there will be a heightened demand for vessels involved in towing, mooring installation, and cable operations. The report urges owners and operators to evaluate whether their current offshore vessels can be modified for these new roles or if there is a need for upgraded or purpose-built vessels to meet specific project requirements.
