Multiple Projectiles Strike Unmanned Cargo Ship Near Al Mukha

A cargo ship has been declared a constructive total loss following an attack from multiple unidentified projectiles off the coast of Yemen, highlighting the escalating risks in the southern Red Sea region. UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the incident occurred approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Al Mukha, with the vessel unmanned at the time of the attack. The damage inflicted has rendered the ship a complete constructive loss, though specific details regarding the ship’s identity and circumstances leading to it being unmanned have not been disclosed.

The attack is part of a trend of deteriorating maritime security in the southern Red Sea, particularly in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Port of Al-Mokha, which remains closed to commercial shipping due to a series of missile impacts. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) has characterized the threat level in this area as substantial, suggesting that further attacks are likely amidst ongoing Houthi activity. Previously, on August 11, there was another incident near Al Mukha when a cargo vessel was hit, leading to fatalities and injuries among the crew.

Simultaneously, the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz is also alarming, with an increase in attacks on commercial shipping, including projectile strikes targeting both incoming and outgoing vessels. JMIC rates the threat level in this region as severe, indicating a high likelihood of deliberate hostile actions. Recently, a cargo ship navigating the Strait was struck in its engine room, resulting in a crew member’s death, prompting a response from the Omani Coast Guard. UKMTO has advised ships operating in the Al Mukha area to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activities.
