Sixteen Indian crew members of the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel AM Pioneer have refused to navigate the Strait of Hormuz due to safety concerns amid ongoing regional conflicts. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) has intervened, alleging that the vessel’s owners and managers are pressuring the captain and crew to proceed despite their objections. The union has called for the crew’s return to India, ensuring they receive their full wages and contractual dues.
In a video shared by the FSUI, Captain Anil Raj expressed his concerns, stating that the vessel had initially docked in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, for a survey and was expected to cross the Strait of Hormuz when deemed safe. However, the situation shifted last week as the company began insisting on a transit through the high-risk waterway, which the crew vehemently opposed. Captain Raj claimed he was being unfairly blamed for the crew’s refusal to comply, asserting that the company attempted to arrange security measures and even sought air support from the Americans to facilitate the crossing.
The crew members have reiterated their stance, stating they will only proceed through the Strait when it is safe for all vessels. The FSUI has urged Indian governmental bodies to take action to protect the crew and ensure their safe repatriation.
