Cargo Vessel Attacked in Strait of Hormuz, Claims One Life

On August 18, a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier, the Minoan Dignity, was attacked while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in significant damage and the tragic death of one crew member. The incident occurred around 01:35 UTC when the vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile during its outbound transit. The attack specifically impacted the engine-room area, where the chief engineer lost his life.

The Omani Coast Guard promptly responded to the situation, assisting in the rescue of the remaining crew members. Fortunately, no pollution was reported in the aftermath of the attack. The Minoan Dignity, which was built in 2004, measures 225 meters in length and 32.2 meters in width. It is registered with Asante Management Co. and managed by Modion Maritime Management.

This incident raises further concerns regarding the safety of commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route. In light of the attack, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has advised vessels operating in the region to exercise increased vigilance and report any suspicious activities, as security threats continue to escalate in this vital shipping corridor.
